LATEST EVENTS - Westonbirt "Festival of the Tree", August 2006
Last time we told you about our adventures at Lakeside Shopping Centre. From August 25th to August 28th our wand workshops visited a very different place: the National Arboretum at Westonbirt in Gloucestershire.
Appropriate for such a tree focused location, magic wands teaches children in a fun way about native trees, their woods, the smell of the leaves and bark, their folklore of magical properties and how to identify them.
At Westonbirt we met a lot of families from Wales and the West Country, and over 100 children visited the workshops each day. Some, such as nine year old Natasha, were multiple visitors, and even helped tidy up. We also had holidaymakers from the Cotswolds and others who had travelled great distances. It was also an opportunity to meet a lot of 'tree people' and to exchange tips with the dryads.
Parents and grandparents seemed universally delighted to discover 'something for the children to do' that interested them in trees in a way that the 'adult information' booths did not. We even used wands to get rid of the rain. A couple of children's workers from a hospital visited and left saying they felt inspired - but were sad that they wouldn't be allowed to take feathers or twigs into a hospital.
